Forest Treasures of Massachusetts and Their Hidden Value

Unbeknownst to many, Massachusetts is home to old-growth forests and outstanding trees suggestive of what grew before the appearance of Europeans in the 1600s. Join internationally known climate policy scientist Dr. William Moomaw and old-growth forest/champion tree sleuth Bob Leverett for a slide presentation as they explore the remnants of the Bay State’s ancient woodlands and big trees, including the treasures on Mount Greylock. Topics will include the ecology, history, and aesthetics of our woodlands with an emphasis on the importance of our mature forests and bigger trees for sequestering large amounts of carbon. It is a story that has not yet been fully told.

Saving Massachusetts Forests for Climate, Nature, and People

A presentation by Michael Kellett on the benefits of forests for people and the climate.

Massachusetts forests are vital in: storing carbon to fight climate change; providing critical habitat for native plants and wildlife; preserving historic and sacred sites; and offering opportunities for nature-based recreation. Yet, almost all of our forests are currently open to resource extraction, which is undermining these values. We need to take action now to protect our forests, before it is too late.

Michael Kellett is cofounder and executive director of RESTORE: The North Woods, a Massachusetts-based conservation organization. With more than 30 years of experience working to protect forests, wildlife, parks, and wilderness, he will review our current challenges and suggest strategies for solving them.

As part of this talk, he'll share stories from that trip, along with provide some updates on how travel has changed since that time. He's currently working on a book about this extensive trip. INDUSTRIAL HEMP

A presentation by Ralph Brill on the potential for Hemp products and economic growth in the Berkshires.

Industrial Hemp has been grown by various civilizations for thousands of years. In North America, the early Colonists planted Hemp as it grew easily and was a source of Food, Fibers and Medicines. George Washington grew Hemp as did Thomas Jefferson. During the Colonial Period in MA, if you owned a few acres, the Laws required that you plant Hemp as the Colonies wanted to be self-sufficient and did not want to import Fabrics from England. Thus, our first Clothing, Flags, Ropes and Ship Sails were made from Local Hemp Fibers.

DEBRA BRICKER BALKEN: PHILLIP GUSTON'S POOR RICHARD

In 1971, Philip Guston embarked on a series of scathing, scabrous images of the 37th president, Richard Nixon.  Unpublished during Guston's lifetime, they were reproduced in a volume overseen by DEBRA BRICKER BALKEN in 2001, only to be revived again last year.  With their narrative of mendacity and deceit, they emerge as an uncanny tale for the age of Trump and the current political period.
